My name is Aruni, and I am originally from Sri Lanka; a beautiful island, nation rich in culture, history, and natural diversity.

My Journey from Sri Lanka to Sweden – A Story of Science, Family, and New Beginnings

Growing up surrounded by lush landscapes, vibrant traditions, and a strong educational foundation, I developed a deep appreciation for both science and cultural heritage. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Colombo, one of the leading institutions in the country.

After graduation, I joined the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, where I gained extensive experience in formulation development, quality control, and quality assurance. Over the years, I developed a strong interest in how materials interact at a molecular level; particularly in biomedical applications.

Pursuing Science and Opportunity in Sweden

In 2023, I took a bold step forward in both my personal and professional life: I moved to Sweden with my family to pursue a master’s degree in Biomedical Surface Science at Malmö University. This decision was driven by my passion for learning and my desire to work at the intersection of chemistry, medicine, and materials science; areas where Sweden is at the forefront.

Living and studying in Sweden has been a truly enriching experience. I enjoyed not only the academic environment and research opportunities, but also the beautiful nature, clean cities, and inclusive, balanced lifestyle. My family and I felt warmly welcomed, and we have grown to love the Swedish culture, traditions, and way of life.

Growing Stronger Together

I am especially grateful to have shared this journey with my loving husband, an experienced IT professional, who has been my constant support and encouragement. I am also incredibly proud of our two wonderful children; our beautiful daughter and handsome son — who have embraced this new chapter of life with curiosity, strength, and enthusiasm. Together, we’ve grown closer as a family while adapting to a new environment.

A Proud Milestone

In June 2025, I proudly graduated with my master’s degree. Now, I’m looking forward to contributing my knowledge and experience to Sweden’s life science sector, and continuing to grow both professionally and personally in this welcoming and innovative environment.

Finding Belonging

One of the most helpful resources during our transition was the International Citizen Hub Lund. Informative seminars, networking events, and expert guidance on Swedish society, the job market, and relocation matters gave us both confidence and clarity as we built our life here. The welcoming atmosphere created a space where international families like ours felt seen, heard, and supported. That guidance has made a significant difference in my journey of integration and growth in Sweden.
