Stories by internationals

In July 2024, I made one of the boldest decisions of my life, leaving my familiar world in the Himalayas of Nepal behind to join my husband here in Sweden. The early days in Sweden were sprinkled with magically vibrant autumn colors, joyful reunions.

When I first moved to Sweden three years ago, I wasn鈥檛 quite sure what I was getting into. After raising my daughters in the vibrant, fast-paced city of Hong Kong, I thought I had a solid understanding of what it takes to adapt to a new country.

I arrived in Sweden 2022, ready to start my Master鈥檚 program. When I moved, I wasn鈥檛 sure if I wanted to stay after my studies. But when I found community and started to enjoy the pace of life here, I decided I wanted to give my best effort to stay.

鈥淲hy come to Sweden?鈥. The answer usually starts with how I have long nurtured a dream of studying abroad, and how a random chat with a friend doing her PhD in Gothenburg led me to the Swedish Institute scholarship and Lund University.

"Where should I apply?" my husband, who works in academia, asked me at the beginning of last year. "Lund, that's my No. 1," I said. "I will go anywhere with you if the compass points north."

As my family and I take a vacation in Puerto Yeru谩, Argentina, It鈥檚 the perfect moment to reflect on our journey. Returning to Argentina after two years reminds us how life continues for everyone, no matter where we are.

I never imagined that my path would take me from the vibrant streets of India to the serene landscapes of Sweden, and ultimately to the dynamic city of Copenhagen, where new opportunities await.

I packed my bags and left my dream job, and the life I had behind. With me, I had a couple of suitcases, some savings, and an acceptance letter into Lund University that represented a new chapter in my life: a master鈥檚 student in Scandinavia.

In 2020, I took a leap, moving from recently graduating design school to life in Sweden, where life rapidly changed - welcoming a child and adapting to pandemic life. Emotions were running high as a newcomer鈥攅xcitement, uncertainty, and curiosity.

What can you learn from my story? I hope it inspires you to never stop pushing forward. Keep learning, stay true to your path, and find community support like I did with the International Citizen Hub Lund.

I had always dreamed of traveling the world, but never imagined that my journey would take me from the sunny Philippines to the bustling city-state of Singapore, and ultimately, to the lush landscapes of Sweden.

Just as 'Lagom' represents the perfect middle ground, I found that building a community here required a balance between giving and receiving, blending into local customs while maintaining my own identity.
