It’s easy to underestimate just how much it takes to move to a new place, not just to relocate, but to truly become part of your new home. No amount of planning, Duolingo learning streaks, or YouTube videos from other expats can prepare you for every hurdle you’ll face.

The ups and downs of starting fresh abroad

There will be days when you can’t believe your luck: when you admire the beautiful old buildings on your daily walks, join in the celebration of a whole day dedicated to cinnamon buns, and feel so grateful you made the move.

But there are also other days. Days when the cashier switches from Swedish to English because you didn’t understand their question. When you receive your third job rejection email of the week. When close friends you’ve made here decide to return home.

Shared experiences, shared strength

That’s when I find myself drawn to the International Citizen Hub Lund. It’s incredible how people from so many different places and backgrounds can relate to the exact same emotions and experiences you’re having. To hear from others that yes, even after ten years of driving experience back home, they too had to retake their driver’s exam here - and they passed! To swap notes on SFI courses and share tips about which language cafés are worth visiting. To laugh at the tiny culture shocks that still catch you off guard, even after years of living here.

Community isn’t something you stumble upon; it’s something you build. Every shared smile, moment of frustration, and word of encouragement becomes a building block toward belonging. The Hub reminds me that we are all part of each other’s journey, helping one another feel at home in a new country.

Discover the power of being you

People sometimes ask if I feel I need to tone down who I am to fit in here. What I’ve learned instead is that belonging comes when you show up as your full self and let others do the same. Here I’ve found a place where differences are not just accepted but appreciated. With every new connection and shared experience, Sweden feels a little more like home. If you’re new here too, I hope you’ll stop by and say hello. You might just discover the community you didn’t know you were missing.
